"Yu-Ann. She—she despises me. I have a confession to make: I went to your place this morning. Of course I wanted to see her, but I didn't expect to find her alone. Or else I shouldn't have gone, I swear it! Actually, along with seeing her, I wanted to talk to Yeshu'a and the others about this business of repairing the carts. And, I hope you'll forgive me, but she was so pretty and sweet, that I—I kissed her—"

"And she clapped you blind!" Miriam said with a low, throaty chuckle.

"Would God she had," I groaned. "Worse than that: she went, got water, and washed her lips!"

"I see," Miriam said. "That's grave, isn't it?" She stood there, thinking. "Nathan—day after tomorrow, my cousin Tabitha's son is marrying Rebekkah bath Yehoiakim at Cana. You come. I extend the invitation now, in their names. Yohannah's one of "the bridesmaids. Then, we'll see. ... Of course, the wedding feast won't be much, because they're poor as we are, but—"

"I won't be interested in food," I said. "Yu-Ann's got me so terrified that—"

"Good!" Miriam laughed. "That's the way it should be! Lord, but I'm tired!"

I turned at once.

"Yose!" I called. "Bring Bedu here! That's it. Now help your mother up on her. ..."

We came into Nazareth like that, with me walking, leading Bedu, and Miriam sitting sidesaddle, proudly, like a queen. One of the dearest of a woman's pleasures is the opportunity to kill her neighbors with pure envy; and it was that opportunity I provided Miriam ha Yosef then. But, as we turned into their street, Yohannah came out of the house and stood there, looking at us. That is, she looked at the others. At me, she glared.

"So," she whispered. "You've won Mother over! Well, it won't do you any good, I can tell you that!"

"Won't it, my lady wife-to-be?" I said; then I kissed her again, there before them all. ~This time she did slap me, hard. I don't know which hurt my ears worse: her hot little hand, or her brothers' roars of laughter. But even that was progress of a sort, after all. At the wedding at Cana, I would make more.
